The E3, called the New Six, was BMW's return to the large luxury saloon after a gap of five years. Every version used the new M30 straight six, and the cars were named after their engine sizes, from the 2500 and 2800 of 1968 through the 3.0 S, the long wheelbase 3.0 L and the 3.3 Li. The design team was led by Wilhelm Hofmeister, and the twin headlights set in the grille became a BMW styling feature for decades. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in one generation: the E3 (1968 to 1977).
