In Britain some 3 litre E3 cars were used by the police in the 1970s, and Thames Valley Police bought a 3.0 Si in 1972, followed in the same year by the Derbyshire Constabulary. The advertising line used was that it takes one to catch one. After the success of the 3.0 Si many police forces began to buy BMW cars, the next being the E12 5 Series in the late 1970s. The 3.0 Si was the fuel injected version of the 3 liter car.
