The E3 was introduced in 1968 as the New Six, BMW's first big saloon after a hiatus of five years and the first with the new M30 straight six. The first two models were the 2500 of 2.5 liters and the 2800 of 2.8 liters, and the design had been led by Wilhelm Hofmeister, with some detail work from the Italian studios of Bertone and Michelotti. Its twin headlights set into the grille were new. The platform was later shortened to make the E9 coupes.
