The first-generation CL entered production in February 1996 as a 1997 model and was built at Honda's plant in East Liberty, Ohio alongside the Civic, which made it the first Acura built in the United States. It came as the 3.0CL with a 200 horsepower V6 or as a 2.2CL with a 145 horsepower four-cylinder, which was replaced for 1998 and 1999 by the 2.3CL with 150 horsepower. Body panels were galvanized to resist rust.
