In 2021 all combustion engine options were removed from the S-Max and replaced by a 2.5 litre petrol hybrid system producing 190 PS. This was the final powertrain for the model, which Ford stopped making two years later when MPV sales declined sharply. Ford marketed it both as a multi purpose vehicle and as a sports activity vehicle, aimed at buyers who wanted space without giving up driving fun. The S-Max was a Ford designed mid size people carrier that shared parts with the Galaxy and the Mondeo, and it was sold only in Europe.
