On 4 January 2005 the Subaru R1 was introduced, a two door version of the R2 with a shorter body and wheelbase. In November 2005 the R2 received a facelift that replaced the spread wings grille with one similar to the Subaru Legacy. The R2 of 2005 was in its third year, a kei car with an inline four, unlike other Subarus, which used boxer engines. The R2 exterior dimensions are largely similar to its predecessor, the Subaru Pleo.
