February 2001 brought the KQ facelift, and with it a 2.0 litre engine for the new top specification SR2, which New Zealand renamed the XRi. The range kept the LXi, GLXi, Ghia and SR trims in sedan and hatchback bodies, but the Laser kept losing ground to rivals. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
