In 2000 the Laser carried on in Australia and New Zealand while in Japan the Ford Focus was already on sale, the car that was later to replace it there. The Laser range was almost identical to the Mazda 323 on which it was based. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323.
