The KN Laser, last of the line, went on sale in Australia in May 1999 with a range almost identical to the Mazda 323 underneath it, the first time that had been true since the KE. New Zealand also received it that May, replacing the Escort it had briefly sold. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
