New Zealand dropped the KL Laser at the end of 1997 and sold the European Escort hatchback and sedan in its place from January 1998. In Japan the next car was renamed Laser Lidea in December 1998, a model whose popularity fell even further. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323.
