The Escort sedan was marketed for fleet sale only for the 2001 and 2002 model years, as Ford introduced the Focus in North America. Retail buyers could still choose the ZX2 coupe, which had been renamed from Escort ZX2 for 2000, while the four door Escort sedan went to fleet customers such as rental companies. The ZX2 used a Zetec 2.0 liter engine of 130 horsepower rather than the sedan's SPI engine.
