In 1993 the second generation of the Sumo arrived with all new sheet metal in line with the related Sambar range. Fuel injection let Subaru add a catalytic converter to the 1.2 liter engine, which was the only engine offered, and the power rose slightly to 54 PS, or 61 PS by the Japanese JIS rating at 5,600 revolutions per minute. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar. The market that the Sumo was targeted at was refocused towards the Subaru Forester.
