Full time four wheel drive with a viscous coupling, called S-AWD by Subaru, was added to the options list in 1994 and was only available together with the ECVT transmission. European versions received an oil cooler to better support light duty towing, and the 1.2 liter fuel injected engine of the second generation remained the only choice. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar. The market that the Sumo was targeted at was refocused towards the Subaru Forester.
