In 1992 the Sumo was in its tenth and last year as the first generation, which had stayed in production long after the Sambar it was derived from had been replaced. Its name differed by market: Domingo in Japan, Libero in most of Europe, Combi in Belgium and Columbuss in Sweden, and the second generation was due the following year. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar. The name Sumo was meant to evoke the strength of a sumo wrestler.
