The Sumo of 1991 was in its ninth year, with the first generation body that shared much with the Sambar and the 1.2 liter EF three cylinder engine. The original Libero and Sumo remained on sale well after the release of the next generation Sambar, which gave the larger van an unusually long life in the first generation form. The name Sumo was meant to evoke the strength of a sumo wrestler. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive.
