In 1990 the Sumo was in its eighth year as a first generation microvan, still the larger sibling of the Sambar, which stayed a kei vehicle. It could be had with 997 cc or 1,189 cc EF three cylinder engines and with selectable four wheel drive, and in some places it was named the Subaru E10 or E12 after the size of its engine. It was launched with the option of four-wheel drive. The Sumo shared many characteristics with the Sambar.
