The model line was named after the Taunus mountain range in Germany, and in 1992 its last survivor, the Otosan Taunus, continued in Turkey. The car had been in production since the Cortina based TC of 1970, with changes to its body panels made for the Turkish market. The Taunus was the family car of Ford Germany, sold under the 12M, 15M, 17M, 20M and 26M names over several generations. It was named after the Taunus mountain range in Germany and was often a close relative of a British Ford.
