The 1989 model year closed the first generation in North America. The five-door liftback had gone out of production the year before, so this was a car sold in the United States as a liftback only, and about 228,000 first-generation Integras had been sold over the four years, most of them in America. In Japan the second generation arrived in April 1989 with the first VTEC engine Honda ever built, ahead of its North American introduction for 1990.
