The Mark 2 Astra was launched on 17 October 1984, and it was voted 1985 European Car of the Year. The Mark 2 replaced the first generation Astra, which had been the Vauxhall badged version of the Opel Kadett D, and it was built at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire. The saloon version was replaced by the Belmont saloon based on the Astra Mk2 in early 1986. The 1984 car was a new Mark 2 that the voters named European Car of the Year for 1985.
