For 1982 the exterior received a minor revision, with an updated grille and the Ford Blue Oval emblem replacing the FORD lettering on the liftgate, in line with the adoption of the oval across Ford's North American lines. In March 1982 a high output version of the 1.6 liter engine was added, first in the EXP and then in the sporting Escort GT, which replaced the SS. It made 80 horsepower through a higher compression ratio and a new exhaust.
