For the 1978 model year a 351 Windsor V8 became the standard engine of the Colony Park, outside California and high altitude areas, with the 400 and 460 as options. The 351 proved to have little fuel economy gain, and most surviving examples have one of the two larger V8 engines. It was the last year of the fifth generation and of the large pillarless hardtop wagon before the 1979 downsizing. It was the premium Mercury wagon, part of the Marquis line, with simulated woodgrain body panels.
