The Taunus TC along with the Cortina Mk III and their successors were produced in slightly updated forms in Europe, Argentina and widely across Asia by Ford or their local co-operators. In 1978 the TC2 was in its third year in Europe, and it was made in Germany and Argentina. The Taunus was the family car of Ford Germany, sold under the 12M, 15M, 17M, 20M and 26M names over several generations. It was named after the Taunus mountain range in Germany and was often a close relative of a British Ford.
