On 7 October 1971 the engine of the R-2 was changed to a water cooled two stroke, the EK34 series, after the Japanese government passed emissions rules in the early 1970s that led makers to rework their air cooled two stroke engines. The retrofit was hastily done, and the car also received a faux grille at the front to look more modern and to resemble the new Leone. The R-2 continued to use the powertrain setup from the Subaru 360.
