Starting in 1960 Belvederes got a brand new standard inline six cylinder engine, the Slant Six, replacing the venerable flathead six, which had overhead valves and a block inclined to the right so as to allow a lower hood. It became known for rugged construction and long life. Unit body construction was introduced throughout the line, and Exner's team was encouraged to go over the top, so the 1960 models were popularly dubbed the jukebox on wheels.
