Dennis is the marque of the Guildford, Surrey, commercial vehicle builder founded as Dennis Brothers by John Cawsey Dennis and Raymond Dennis, who began with Speed King bicycles in 1895 and built their first motor vehicle in 1898. The firm incorporated as Dennis Brothers Limited in 1901, made cars until about 1913, and then concentrated on buses, fire engines, lorries and municipal vehicles such as dustcarts, all built to the customer's order. Ownership passed through several groups after the original shareholders sold out in 1972, and the name appeared on vehicles from Dennis Motors, Hestair Dennis and Dennis Specialist Vehicles. The Dennis name survives on Alexander Dennis buses, Dennis Eagle refuse vehicles and Dennis mowers. This make groups the Dennis-badged models of the Dennis Specialist Vehicles company, from front-engined buses and Loline double-deckers to the Sabre and Rapier fire engines.
