The first generation MR2 arrived in 1984 with the model code W10, after cooperating with Lotus on the prototype, which shows in the AW11's character. In Japan it was sold only through the Toyota Auto Store and Toyota Vista Store, and it won Car of the Year Japan on its introduction. The MK1a came in June 1984 as a 1985 model, a supercharged 4A-GZE arrived in 1986 and in 1988 in the US, and the MK1b facelift came in August 1986. Two final Super Editions followed in 1988 and 1989.
