In 1980 the rear engined Rex entered its last full year, still in the 550 cc form with a two cylinder four stroke engine behind the rear axle. Subaru added an automatic clutch option on several versions in March 1980, a semi automatic arrangement that spared the driver the clutch pedal in town traffic. The Rex's styling resembled Subaru's new compact car, the Leone. The Rex retained the rear engine layout of the Subaru 360 and R-2.
