The first generation Mazda2, the DY series, came from the Ford B3 platform shared with the fifth generation Ford Fiesta, under chief engineer Kiyoshi Fujiwara, who also oversaw the platform's development at Ford's European research center. Production for Europe was handed to Ford's Almussafes plant in Valencia, Spain, from 20 January 2003. Japan had the Cozy, Sport and Casual trims and the e-4WD system that drives the rear wheels with an electric motor, and Europe used Ford's 1.25 liter Sigma petrol and a 1.4 diesel. Its model years run from 2002 to 2006.
