The Mazda2 began in 2002, replacing the Mazda 121 as the entry level Mazda outside Japan, while in Japan the car kept the Demio name. Mazda built it from the Ford B3 platform shared with the fifth generation Ford Fiesta, and chief engineer Kiyoshi Fujiwara led the work. It was a tall, high roofed hatchback, and Japanese buyers could choose Cozy, Sport or Casual trim, with the Japanese 1.3 and 1.5 liter petrol engines.
