European Mazda2 production moved to Ford's Almussafes plant in Valencia, Spain, on 20 January 2003, so that the car sold in Europe was built by Ford. The European version had its own pedal box taken from the Ford Fiesta and used Ford's 1.25 liter Sigma petrol engine and a 1.4 liter turbodiesel that Mazda called the 1.4 CDTi, with the S, TS and TS2 trim levels. The Japanese car had the e-4WD system as an option.
