The second generation Mazda2 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007 and then at Shanghai, on a platform similar to that of the sixth generation Ford Fiesta. It used lighter materials, shrank slightly, and dropped the tall roof of its predecessor for a more conventional hatchback shape, designed under Ikuo Maeda. Sales began in Japan on 5 July 2007, a three door joined it in Europe in 2008, and a sedan was built in Thailand and China. It won the 2008 World Car of the Year. Its model years run from 2007 to 2013.
