The first generation RX-7, coded SA in its early years and FB later, was a two seat coupe with a rear hatchback, introduced in Japan in March 1978 to replace the Savanna RX-3. It used a compact 12A rotary engine mounted behind the front axle, which gave a low center of gravity and a nearly even weight balance, and the later 13B with fuel injection. It weighed under 1,100 kilograms, the lightest of the three generations, and 471,018 were built. Its model years run from 1978 to 1985.
