1978 Mazda RX-7

Automobiles

The RX-7 was introduced in Japan in March 1978, replacing the Savanna RX-3 and joining the Cosmo and Luce as one of Mazda's remaining rotary engined cars. Mazda's internal project number was X605, and the lead designer was Matasaburo Maeda, whose son Ikuo later designed the Demio and the RX-8. The Japanese Savanna RX-7 had a 12A rotary engine of 130 PS, and the compact engine sat behind the front axle for a low center of gravity.
