In 1980 Mazda introduced a limited run North American model called the Leathersport, or LS, an uprated GS with brown leather upholstery, gold anodised wheels, exterior stripes and a removable sunroof, available in only three colours. In the same year a 12A engined RX-7 qualified for Le Mans and placed 21st overall, and cars prepared by Tom Walkinshaw Racing won the British Touring Car Championship driven by Win Percy.
