The Cougar was Ford's sports coupe for Europe, built on the Mondeo and sold from late 1998 to 2002 as a successor in spirit to the Capri, after the Mazda based Probe. It was planned as the third Probe but took the Cougar name, and in North America it was the Mercury Cougar. Its New Edge styling drew mixed reviews and sales stayed below those of the Capri.
