The Cougar was retired from the European market in August 2002, ending a coupe that had been Ford's second attempt at a Capri style sports car in Europe. It was based on the Mondeo and had been built in the United States, and its Mercury version was sold in North America until 2002. The Cougar was a coupe on the Mondeo platform that Ford sold in Europe from 1998 to 2002. Its New Edge styling was controversial, and it was meant to be a modern successor to the Capri.
