The Cougar was withdrawn from the British market in February 2001 after poor sales, though it stayed on sale elsewhere in Europe for another year. In North America the Mercury Cougar of 2001 was the same car, which had once been intended as the third generation of the Probe. Its New Edge styling was controversial, and it was meant to be a modern successor to the Capri. The Cougar was a coupe on the Mondeo platform that Ford sold in Europe from 1998 to 2002.
