After its first two years of production only 12,000 Cougars had reportedly been sold in the United Kingdom, well short of the levels of the earlier Capri. It was based on the Mondeo, and in 2000 it was a sports coupe and liftback sold in Europe by Ford, and in North America as a Mercury. The Cougar was a coupe on the Mondeo platform that Ford sold in Europe from 1998 to 2002. Its New Edge styling was controversial, and it was meant to be a modern successor to the Capri.
