The Cougar was released in Australia in October 1999 with only the 2.5 litre 24 valve Duratec V6 engine, and sales there continued until March 2004. It was built in the United States like its predecessor, the Probe, and cars for Europe were finished in Ford's plant at Köln. Its New Edge styling was controversial, and it was meant to be a modern successor to the Capri. The Cougar was a coupe on the Mondeo platform that Ford sold in Europe from 1998 to 2002.
