The Cougar went on sale in Europe in December 1998 to mixed reviews, partly because of its new and controversial New Edge styling. Ford unveiled it in Britain in July 1998 at the British Grand Prix, with advertising that starred the actor Dennis Hopper in a silver car. The Cougar was a coupe on the Mondeo platform that Ford sold in Europe from 1998 to 2002. Its New Edge styling was controversial, and it was meant to be a modern successor to the Capri.
