Launched with a 1,896 cubic centimeter engine as a 1976 model in November 1975, the Cavalier was a restyled version of the Opel Ascona B, which had debuted three months earlier in West Germany. The Ascona and Cavalier were built on what General Motors called the U car platform, essentially a stretched version of the T car. Its model years run from 1976 to 1981. The Mark I was sold with an Opel Ascona twin until July 1981, when Opel stopped selling cars in Britain.
