In early 1980 an updated variant of the Chevrolet Chevair, the South African version of the car, was introduced with a new grille and new wraparound bumpers in black plastic. Despite being the same car mechanically, the Opel Ascona was sold alongside the Cavalier in the United Kingdom until 24 July 1981. The Cavalier of 1980 was built at Luton. The 1980 Cavalier was the last full year of the Mark I, which had the rear drive and a shared Ascona body.
