The first Prius, coded NHW10, went on sale in Japan on 10 December 1997 and was the first mass produced petrol electric hybrid car. For its first two years it was sold only in Japan, built at the Takaoka plant, and it took the Car of the Year Japan award on its debut. The NHW11 version that replaced it in 2000 was larger and stronger and was the first Prius sold outside Japan, in Asia, America, Europe and Australia, with Toyota selling about 123,000 first generation cars in all.
