The XW20 was a complete redesign, shown at the New York show in April 2003 for the 2004 model year. It grew into a compact five door liftback midway in size between the Corolla and the Camry, with more rear legroom and luggage space, a more aerodynamic Kammback body and an electric air conditioning compressor, a first for the industry. Chief engineer Shigeyuki Hori's team filed 530 patents on it, and it was also built in China by FAW Toyota from 2005. Toyota sold about 1.19 million of them.
