The first production Prius, the NHW10, went on sale in Japan on 10 December 1997 and was the world's first mass produced petrol electric hybrid. Production began that month at the Takaoka plant in Toyota City, and the car took Japan's Car of the Year prize as soon as it appeared, well ahead of any rival hybrid. This was the first model year of the Toyota Prius (first generation, XW10), 1997 to 2002, the first generation covered for the Toyota Prius; the 1998 model year follows it. Model year pages for the Toyota Prius run from 1997 to 2025.
