The Prado began as a light duty version of the 70 Series in November 1984. The Prado name arrived in April 1990 on a new type that was still largely based on the heavy duty J70 with a redesigned front grille, front wings, engine bonnet, head lamps and the coil sprung suspension carried over from the previous generation. In 1993 the 2L-TE turbocharged diesel engine was replaced by the 3.0 liter 1KZ-TE turbocharged diesel engine with aluminium cylinder head.
