Toyota Land Cruiser (BJ and FJ series)

Automobiles

The Toyota Jeep BJ prototype was developed in January 1951 in response to demand for military type utility vehicles, with a 3.4 liter six cylinder engine and part time four wheel drive but no low range transfer case. In July 1951 test driver Ichiro Taira drove a prototype up to the sixth stage of Mount Fuji, and the National Police Agency ordered 289 of the vehicles as its official patrol car. Regular production began in 1953, and in June 1954 technical director Hanji Umehara coined the name Land Cruiser.
