The second generation Kijang, designated KF20, launched in June 1981 and retained its boxy style with different body panels. Under its slimmer bonnet was a 1.3 liter 4K engine, replaced in December 1985 by a 1.5 liter 5K engine. The Kijang started selling very strongly in 1983 and 1984, and in February 1985 the 100,000th Kijang left the production line, while in South Africa production commenced in 1982 for the local market.
