The first Cresta arrived in April 1980 and was available exclusively at the recently introduced Toyota Vista Store, while Toyota Auto Store sales channels across Japan sold the Chaser. Luxury image branding was further enhanced when the Toyota Soarer performance luxury coupe was introduced in February 1981, and the Cresta's appearance was updated to make it look similar. It shared the chassis with the Mark II and the Chaser.
