Production of the E110 started in May 1995 on the platform of the E100, with some shared doors, and the look was only slightly altered through its life. In 1998 some non Japanese cars received the new aluminum 1ZZ-FE engine for the first time, and the North American car was delayed to mid 1997 for the 1998 model year with its own front and rear styling, as were the versions for Europe and Australasia. The Geo Prizm twin became the Chevrolet Prizm when General Motors dropped the Geo brand.
